Another month… another set of artists, raring to get down into the basement and begin work. This month’s are…

Jan Williams

Williams’ current work is an exploration into the architectural space of her studio in Cardiff. Working from direct observation she paints spontaneously onto board, dynamicallyt integrating the formal values of representational painting with those of abstraction. Pared down compositions are rendered with subtle areas of light and shade, often including shadows and shafts of sunlight permeating through unseen windows. The artist’s choice of a neutral palette helps her focus on the effect of light in the paintings, whilst evoking an atmosphere of calm that encourages contemplation.

Faye Darby

Faye Darby is a trained teacher of art and is currently studying an MFA in Fine Art at Cardiff School of Art and Design UWIC.  She aims to develop her own practice as a Fine Artist whilst also continuing work within the field of art education. Specific areas of interest within her practice include the study of nature and natural forms through drawing and printmaking.

Cathryn Lowri Griffith

Cathryn Lowri Griffith is a fervent believer in the importance of mark-making as way of self expression; drawing is hugely important to her. Though predominantly a painter, Cathryn has recently been experimenting more and more with a variety of media, including collage and photography. Themes that interest the artist are highly decorative architecture and repeat pattern. Her work tends to be an exploration of surface, process, shape and colour. Recent work has included large-scale visceral mixed media drawings and photographs, as well as cropped images of the surface of her pieces, taken with a macro lens.

Jo Ward

Jo Ward is a visual artist who works primarily in photography, sculpture and moving image. Her practice is concerned with the perception of space and light explored through investigation.
